Peter Lilley, Co-Chairman of UBTIC, meets Uzbek students
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23 October 2012 senior member of the British Parliament and Co-chairman of the Uzbek British Trade and Industry Council the Rt Hon Peter Lilley delivered special lectures in two of the most prestigious universities in Uzbekistan – Westminster International University in Tashkent and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy.

British Embassy in Tashkent said that during the lectures Peter Lilley spoke about his work as a former Cabinet Minister under former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and his current role in the UK Parliament as an influential MP. He also gave an overview of his role as Co-Chair of the Uzbek British Trade and Industry Council; and discussed the current economic crisis affecting many countries in the world.

During lively sessions following the speeches, where the students had the opportunity to raise questions, a wide range of subjects were raised including the development of the Uzbek/ British trade relationship, and the future of the global economy. Students also heard some personal anecdotes from Peter Lilley about his time working for Margaret Thatcher, and about certain unique aspects of the British Houses of Parliament.

At Westminster University Peter Lilley enjoyed a traditional plov following the speeches. He was able to meet students in person for more detailed conversation. The event was also attended by a range of British alumni currently living and working in Uzbekistan. Peter Lilley said ‘it was a joy to meet so many bright and interesting young people: the future of this fascinating country, while enjoying traditional Uzbek cuisine and making the most of Uzbekistan’s famous hospitality’.
