Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – The elections for the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan and local councils of deputies will take place on 27 October 2024. This was announced by the Chairman of the Central Election Commission Zayniddin Nizamkhodjaev.

During a briefing in Tashkent, Nizamkhodjaev stated that the election campaign will start on 26 July.

Nizamkhodjaev reminded that in late 2023, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law transitioning to a mixed electoral system, which will be used for the upcoming elections to the Legislative Chamber.

The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis consists of 150 deputies elected for a five-year term. According to the new law, 75 deputies will be elected from single-member districts, while the remaining 75 will be elected based on party lists proportionally to the number of votes received by political parties in a single electoral district.

Elections for regional, district, and city councils of people’s deputies will also be held for a five-year term but will use multi-party electoral districts. The number of seats in these councils is determined based on population size, explained the Chairman of the Central Election Commission.

Previous parliamentary elections, held at the end of 2019, used a majoritarian system with the principle of absolute majority. In those elections, the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (UzLiDep) secured 53 out of 150 seats. The parties "Milliy Tiklanish" (National Revival) and "Adolat" (Justice) won 36 and 24 seats respectively. The National Democratic Party (NDP) and the Ecological Party occupied the remaining seats with 22 and 15 mandates.

Uzbekistan officially registers five political parties, each of which has its factions in the parliament.
