Oxfam Novib plans to expand its activity in Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- International organization on development and cooperation Oxfam Novib (the Netherlands) is planning to expand its activity in Central Asian, including in Uzbekistan, soon.

The organization is planning to issue 1.5 million euros to microfinance institutes (MFIs) of Central Asia as loan and 500,000 euros as investments and assistance to strengthen their institutional potential.

At the same time, the organization is planning to support development of socially oriented MFIs and expand access of population to financial services in rural area, in particular women.

On 27 October 2010, the presentation of Oxfam Novib was held in Tashkent. Representatives of microcredit organizations (MCOs) and credit unions from all regions of Uzbekistan attended the event. Operations director Oxfam Novib Carl Jansen arrived in Tashkent from the Netherlands.

The event was aimed at providing MCOs and credit unions to establish mutual beneficial cooperation and exchange knowledge with international donor in microfinancing.

Oxfam Novib was founded in the mid of 1950s and it is mainly financed by the government of the Netherlands. The organization’s main activity is directed at supporting low-income and vulnerable layers of population, including in rural areas through presenting loans, investment capital and assistance to microfinance organizations to strengthen their potential.

Carl Jansen underlined that Oxfam Novib is interested in long-term cooperation and rendering support to development of microfinance sector of Uzbekistan. He said that the meeting gave opportunity to meet with local MFIs and discuss their needs and opportunities of the sector in order to ensure targeted support in the future.

The event was organized by the joint project of the Central Bank of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) "Support to microfinance sector development". The project is aimed at creating sustainable MFIs system, introduction of advanced international practice in microfinancing activity in Uzbekistan, assist local MCOs and credit unions to expand cooperation with international parters.
