Over 1,000 operations on children using cochlear implants performed in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A methodological seminar with international participation on the topic "Psychological and pedagogical support of children with cochlear implants" was held in Tashkent and the city of Samarkand. The seminar was held in on-line and off-line formats.

The organizers were the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Pediatrics, the Samarkand State Medical Institute, the Medel Company (Austria).

The goal is to discuss the results achieved in recent years on the problem of children with hearing impairments. The main objectives of this event were to increase the efficiency of research, exchange of experience, and, of course, the introduction of new deaf-pedagogical developments to increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation of children with hearing impairments.

The seminar was attended by over 200 deaf teachers, speech therapists, rehabilitation therapists from various regions of our country, as well as invited specialists from Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus.

For the first time in Uzbekistan, Doctor of Psychological Sciences Inna Koroleva delivered her lectures and practical skills in working with children with hearing impairments. She introduced her many years of experience in working with deaf children, presented new methods of developing speech in patients after cochlear implantation operations. Also, a specialist from Belarus Svetlana Burnos demonstrated a new method of developing speech in children by the method of singing. In the final presentation, specialists from Uzbekistan shared their experience in the rehabilitation of children in Uzbekistan.

At the seminar, it was said that since 2014, cochlear implantation operations have been carried out in Uzbekistan for children with hearing impairments and deafness. For example, in 2016, only 150 children with sensorineural deafness or hearing loss underwent surgery using cochlear implants, in 2018 this figure was 239, in 2019 - 320, and in 2020 - 225 children. In recent years, funding for the cochlear implantation program has increased in our country.

Correctly performed surgery does not always lead to complete rehabilitation. The postoperative period is very important when it is necessary to develop the child's speech. It is necessary to organize the correct approach to rehabilitation, when deaf teachers, together with the patients' parents, deal with the children on a daily basis. Early diagnosis, surgical treatment and proper rehabilitation, the child can fully attend secondary schools and does not differ from his peers.
