Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A roundtable discussion to explore the challenges of expanding cross-border trade between Kyrgyzstan and neighbouring countries started in Batken on 17 June, with the support of the OSCE Centre’s Field Office in Osh.

The event was organized by the Public Foundation Club of Economic Development "Dialogue". It brought together representatives of the business community and authorities, including government officials from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and the Batken province administration as well as customs, border and tax officials.

The local administration has identified the need to further facilitate cross border trade to support small and medium size enterprises. "Supporting cross-border trade is an important approach to expanding economic opportunities in this remote region to bring more wealth to the local population," said Martin Rossmann, Economic and Environmental Officer at the OSCE Centre’s Field Office in Osh.

Batken province, the southernmost part of Kyrgyzstan, borders Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, which makes cross-border trade vital for its economic livelihood. However, bureaucratic barriers remain a serious impediment to growth.

The roundtable discussion will provide policy recommendations for the Government and the Kyrgyz Parliament. The event is part of an OSCE-supported project to improve investment opportunities and create more favourable conditions for business.
