OSCE Centre in Bishkek supports debate on regional security in Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A major OSCE-supported conference to discuss regional security challenges in Central Asia was organized today by the International University of Kyrgyzstan.

The conference "Regional Security in Central Asia in the 21st century: new approaches in a globalizing environment" brought together over 60 students and academics from four leading Kyrgyz universities, as well as senior experts from the State Foreign Ministry of Kyrgyzstan.

The issues discussed ranged from politico-military aspects of security such as the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, to economic and environmental topics like labour migration and water resources, and issues related to human rights and democratisation. The aim of the conference was to exchange ideas and experience and raise the level of knowledge about regional security challenges and possible solutions in Central Asia, enhancing the students’ sense of empowerment and responsibility for their country’s future.

"While each Central Asian state faces unique problems, the countries of this geopolitically significant region also share a great number of common security challenges," said Alexander Vinnikov, Senior Political Officer at the OSCE Centre in Bishkek. "Tackling these challenges effectively and co-operatively is a test for the region’s current and future leaders. The conference participants’ critical thinking and openness to debate were particularly encouraging, as these young people are tomorrow’s decision-makers who will help shape the future of their country, and of this region as a whole."

The Rector of the International University of Kyrgyzstan, Professor Bermet Khudaybergenova, added: "The conference looked at many dimensions of today’s security challenges and the roots of current socio-political processes in Central Asia. A common regional approach and further development of regional integration is crucial for enhancing stability in the region in the face of emerging security threats."

The conference was supported by the OSCE Centre in Bishkek within the framework of its project aimed at strengthening the involvement of youth and women in Kyrgyzstan’s political life.
