Number of Internet users reaches 7.4m in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Total capacity of international Internet channel in Uzbekistan reached 2.5 Gbps and number of Internet users made up 7.4 million in 2010, Director-General of the Uzbek Agency for Communication and Information (UzACI) Hakim Muhitdinov said at the meeting of the Board on 27 January.

The UzACI chief said that number of broadband Internet users in Uzbekistan rose from 38,000 people to 50,000 in 2010.

He said that enterprises of communication and information rendered services for 1.87 trillion soums, which is up 14.8% year-on-year. About 66.7% of all incomes or 1.25 trillion soums fell to share of services to population.

Enterprises and organizations of the sector fulfilled the forecast plan on export with 32.9%

The sector attracted US$384.05 million or 548.35 billion soums of direct investments and loans within investment projects. The enterprises of industry also invested about 53.9 billion soums of own resources in 2010.

Number of correspondence made up 685.3 per 1,000 habitants, the UzACI Director-General Hakim Muhitdinov said.

As of 1 January 2011, the number of enterprises, rendering data transfer service, including Internet, made up 934 and total number of collective internet access points reached 985.

Number of registered domains in .UZ currently exceeded 11,095, the UzACI chief said.

As earlier reported, Uzbekistan plans to increase international Internet channel capacity by four times in 2011 and increase number of fixed Internet users number from 3 million to 3.5 million.

Uzbekistan government also put task to double number of broadband Internet users in 2011 to 100,000.
