Nukus hosts a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation led by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk visited the city of Nukus on 14 March.

As part of a visit to the Karakalpak State Museum of Arts named after I.V. Savitsky hosted an event with the participation of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. It was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action in the field of human rights.

This event, held jointly with the National Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights and the Karakalpak State Museum of Arts named after I.V. Savitsky, was organized in online and offline formats. It was attended by representatives of the youth of Uzbekistan, including students of the Republic of Karakalpakstan.

At the event, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights F. Türk delivered a speech on the topic “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Human Rights”.

According to the resolution of the UN General Assembly of 10 December 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted. This international document protects the rights of everyone to personal integrity, property, freedom of religion and speech, citizenship, participation in government, participation in elections, family, work and leisure, education, access to medical and social services, use of cultural and creative achievements.

Since the publication of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the international community has recognized human rights and fundamental freedoms. Prior to this, the world community promoted the observance of these rights and freedoms on a global scale through the norms and mechanisms of international human rights law.

As noted at the event, on 10 December this year, the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be widely celebrated. Global events on the eve of the anniversary of the declaration started on 10 December 2022 - International Human Rights Day.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is running an annual advocacy campaign to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Declaration. In this process, special attention is paid to identifying the effectiveness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the past, its relevance today, and practical features.

The event organized at the State Museum of Arts named after I.V. Savitsky, is a continuation of this global campaign to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Here, first of all, it should be noted that the Global Forum "Human Rights Education" was organized in Samarkand on 5-6 December 2022 in cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. This is important because one of the rights guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the right to education, is the starting point for the enjoyment of all human rights.

The right to education includes human rights education and the study of these rights, as well as the methods and means of protecting and promoting human rights in our society. Education and training in human rights is a process that lasts throughout a person's life and extends to different age periods.

In this sense, it is important that the decision of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan from 7 February 2023 approved the National Program for Human Rights Education in the Republic of Uzbekistan. As part of the timely, complete and effective implementation of this document, on 20-28 February this year, the Human Rights Week was held throughout the country.

The Declaration contains rights that belong equally to all people, and today it has been translated into more than 530 languages of the world. At the same time, it should be noted that this Declaration was translated into Uzbek and Karakalpak languages at the initiative of the National Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights, was repeatedly published and distributed by it.

Recently, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was republished as separate booklets in Uzbek (Cyrillic and Latin) and Karakalpak. It is also a wonderful gift for the 75th anniversary of the Declaration, which for the first time in the history of mankind proclaimed the need to protect fundamental human rights.

At the end of the event, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights F. Turk answered questions from students.
