Sports 13/11/2008 Nishino driven by Urawa’s success
Gamba Osaka coach Akira Nishino with the ACL Cup
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The success of fellow J.League club Urawa Reds in last year’s AFC Champions League was one of the spurs that drove Gamba Osaka to glory, coach Akira Nishino revealed after his side’s title win.

Gamba completed a 5-0 aggregate win over A-League side Adelaide United with a 2-0 success at Hindmarsh Stadium building on the 3-0 victory in the first leg last week as Nishino and his team emulated Urawa’s victory.

The two clubs - bitter rivals in the J.League - faced off in the semi-finals of this year’s AFC Champions League, with Gamba emerging victorious in a high-quality encounter which included a 3-1 win at Urawa’s Saitama Stadium.

That victory, coupled with the win against Adelaide in Australia on Wednesday night ensured Gamba not only claimed the trophy, but did so by winning all six of their games on their travels.

“Winning all of our away matches rivals what Urawa Reds did last year, although I’m not sure Urawa would see us as rivals,” said Nishino.

“I wanted to win after what Reds did but I wanted to do it with a different style. We won all our away matches and that showed we are in good shape.”

Gamba completed their participation in this year’s AFC Champions League with an unbeaten record while their aggregate win over Adelaide was the largest margin of victory achieved in the final since the current format was launched back in 2002.

The J.League side went into the second leg as overwhelming favourites after their win in Osaka and, after Adelaide pushed forward in the opening exchanges, Gamba registered the perfect start with a goal from Brazilian striker Lucas in the fourth minute.

That all but killed off Adelaide and, 11 minutes later, Lucas found the back of the net again to put the result completely beyond doubt.

“All I can say s that I’m very, very happy to win this title,” said Nishino. “There has been a lot of pressure so I’m really happy we won the trophy.

“We started smoother than I expected. I was expecting a lot of pressure but we were aggressive and we avoided the pressure and being able to win the game in the first half was great.”

In addition to be motivated to match Urawa’s achievement, Nishino was keen for his team to put on a better performance than in their previous participation, when they crashed out in the group stages in 2006.

“For Gamba and myself this is the second time we have played in the ACL and we were always thinking about doing better than in the previous tournament,” he said.

“But honestly we never thought about the final result until we got through to the final.

“As a coach I’m very satisfied, it’s something I have aimed for throughout the season. The standard has been very high and I’m really very happy that we have won.”
