Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – Navoi Mining & Metallurgy Company (NGMK), the fourth-largest gold producer in the world and the largest gold miner in Central Asia, has become the first partner company from Uzbekistan to join the International Women in Mining (IWiM) organization.
This partnership marks a significant step forward in NGMK’s commitment to gender equality and empowering women.
Gender issues have long been a key focus for NGMK. As the largest employer in the country, with 6,261 women on its staff (about 13% of employees), NGMK demonstrates its dedication to creating additional opportunities for women in an industry traditionally dominated by men.
Since 2020, the company has implemented "Principles of Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment." NGMK has also established a Women’s Council, with representatives in each division responsible for advancing gender equality initiatives. Meetings and events are held to promote and protect women’s rights, and to expand opportunities for education and development.
The partnership grants NGMK access to IWiM’s extensive knowledge base, global network of contacts, and participation in industry research and surveys. NGMK will continue to develop its gender agenda in line with IWiM’s mission, contributing to the movement for equal opportunities and inclusivity.
Leveraging IWiM’s international experience and resources will enable NGMK to create a supportive environment for its female employees, fostering their professional growth and leadership development.
NGMK hopes to inspire other companies with its example, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for the mining sector in Uzbekistan and beyond.
