Uzbekistan 18/02/2008 New governor of Khorezm region appointed

In 2007, the total regional product in the region has grown almost for 8%, in the industry there was a growth for 11.8%, in capital construction for 11.6%, in sphere of paid services for 19.7%. The share of small business and private sector in the regional product made up 64.4%. The export potential of the region is also rising.

The President has noted that significant work in developing the social sphere, improving the living standard of the population, and the public health services is done. Only in the last year, eight professional colleges, one academic lyceum have been built, 32 schools were constructed and totally reconstructed. Urgench branch of the Republican specialized urological center and the Center of Emergency Medical Aid have been put into operation.

However, a slow development in the industrial spheres is observed. That fact that within last seven years the share of the industry in total regional product remains without changes at eight% clearly proves it. Available opportunities are not completely realized. Work on attracting foreign investments does not meet the requirements. In the past to year there was no realized joint project with participation of foreign investors with the initiative of regional governor’s office.

The condition of the soil has worsened. Today more than 28,000 hectares of the irrigated land in the region has unsatisfactorily condition. Productivity in agricultural crops, in particular in cotton production has decreased, UzA reported.

The organizational question has been considered at the session. Islom Babajanov has been dismissed from governor’s post in Khorezm region. On the recommendation from the President of Uzbekistan, Ollobergan Ollaberganov has been approved as the governor the Khorezm region, who up to the time was the first deputy governor of the Khorezm region on rural and water management.
