Economy 11/05/2009 New garments market under construction on Uzbek-Afghan border

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The construction of the new Termiz garments market, the project cost of which is about 7 billion soums (US$4.8 million), has started in the administrative centre of Surkhondaryo region in Uzbekistan.

An official from the town administration said that the local administration would make its contribution to the project by allocating 6.5 hectares of land in a port area of the Amudarya river. Shareholders will invest the rest 49% of the necessary funds.

According to the project, there are plans to build 500 stores. The area of each store will be 36 square metres plus nine square metres for storage. In addition to this, there are plans to build six multi-storey supermarkets.

A catering unit, as well as units to sell ice-cream and soft drinks will be built there, which will create nearly 1,500 new jobs at the market complex not far from the Amudarya River (on Uzbek-Afghan border).
