NATO’s special envoy pays visit to Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia Robert Simmons visited Uzbekistan on 12-13 October, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan said.

During the visit, he held negotiations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense of Uzbekistan.

The sides discussed current affairs and perspectives of developing cooperation between Uzbekistan and NATO. The sides discussed implementation of joint projects with Trust Fund and Science for Peace and Security.

The sides also considered international and regional security issues of mutual interest. In particular, the sides reviewed issues of establishing peace and stability in Afghanistan, possible cooperation ways in this context, as well as situation in Kyrgyzstan.

Speaking about peacemaking mission of NATO in Afghanistan, Robert Simmons highly rated efforts of Uzbekistan in settlement and social-economic development of Afghanistan.

The Uzbek side informed Simmons about initiative of Uzbek President Islam Karimov on contact group 6+3 with attracting NATO to its work.

NATO envoy underlined that the Alliance leadership highly rates view of Uzbekistan on current state and perspectives of stability in Central Asia and considers Uzbekistan as key partner in the region.

During the negotiations, the sides exchanged opinion on fighting terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and other transnational threats to security.

Robert Simmons participated in closure ceremony of project on utilization of rocket fuel Melanj in Uzbekistan.

The government of Uzbekistan and NATO signed agreement on technical maintenance and supply of realization of project on utilization of component of rocket fuel Melanj in Uzbekistan on 28 November 2008. The project helped to utilize rocket fuel to low-grade nitric fertilizers, which can be used in agriculture sector.

The project was ended in July 2010 and the closing ceremony was held in Tashkent on 12 October 2010 at participation of NATO’s Special Envoy.

Uzbekistan joined to NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) on 13 July 1994. In 1996, Uzbekistan cooperates within Individual Partnership Programme on basic priority directions, including training of military specialists, cooperation in science and civil emergency planning.
