Moratorium on granting citizenship to Central Asian nationals proposed in Russia

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Russian State Duma Deputy Sergey Mironov has proposed introducing a moratorium on granting citizenship to nationals from Central Asia.

In a post on his Telegram channel, the leader of the "A Just Russia – For Truth" party expressed confusion over the allocation of budget funds for the social support of new citizens, questioning whether it is beneficial for Russia.

"I propose a temporary moratorium on granting Russian citizenship to nationals from Central Asia. We first raised this initiative back in 2022 when we were essentially the only ones fighting to bring order to the migration sector. Now, as migration issues have become a priority for lawmakers, it's necessary to revisit this matter," Mironov wrote.

According to him, the mass issuance of passports to migrant workers benefits only corrupt officials and fraudsters who profit from legalizing migrants.

"The state must confront this mafia and protect its national security interests, including through a moratorium on granting citizenship to residents of Central Asian countries, at least until 2026," the deputy stated.

He also added that during this time, legislation should be revised, the migration service reformed, and the legality of previously issued passports checked.
