Mitsubishi to supply equipment for power plant in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. on Wednesday announced that it has clinched an order for a gas-fired power plant from major Spanish engineering firm Initec Energia SA.

The order is for a gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant, a highly efficient facility that generates electricity via gas turbines, then uses exhaust heat to create steam for turning a turbine that generates more energy. Mitsubishi Heavy will supply generators for the 478,000kw plant, which Initec will construct in Navoi, Uzbekistan.

Thought to be worth 20-30 billion yen (US$224-336 million), the order is the first Mitsubishi Heavy has received for a large-scale facility of this nature in 10 months.

Navoi is a production region for natural resources including crude oil, natural gas and precious metals, and is home to such industries as chemical fertilizer producers. The new plant will supply electricity to the city along with water warmed by heat given off during power generation.

This is the first order Mitsubishi Heavy has received for GTCC equipment bound for Uzbekistan. It hopes to participate in more projects in that country, where power demand is growing.

In July 2009, Spain’s Initec won a tender of the Uzbekenergo state joint-stock company to modernize Navoi thermoelectric power station with the cost of 450 million euros.

In line with the competition terms, Initec will construct combined-cycle plant at the Navoi station with the capacity of 477 megawatt.

The project will be financed due to the resources of the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan and own resources of Uzbekenergo.

Modernization of Navoi thermoelectric power station will provide electricity to Navoi free industrial and economic zone.

Navoi thermoelectric power station was built in 1963 for energy supply of Kyzylkum region. It is one of the largest power stations in Central Asia. Its capacity is equal to 1,250 megawatt.
