Mirziyoyev orders overhaul of Syrdarya region’s agriculture using new approaches
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 5 May, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting focused on the development of agriculture in the Syrdarya region through the adoption of modern and effective methods.
Despite its relatively small territory, Syrdarya holds significant agricultural potential. The region’s main arable lands are located along rivers and canals, making it highly suitable for farming.
During the meeting, the results of on-site studies were reviewed, and plans for the modernization of the agricultural sector were discussed. Proposals were made to cultivate crops based on the region’s soil and climate conditions, and to boost the yields of wheat, vegetables, and potatoes in steppe areas.
Irrigation networks are set to be repaired, with 20,000 hectares of land to be reclaimed over the next two years. Large-scale livestock complexes covering 9,000 hectares will be launched in the Akaltyn, Gulistan, and Bayaut districts. Additionally, a new cotton cultivation technology will be introduced across 7,000 hectares.
Currently, the region has 10,000 hectares of orchards and vineyards, but more than half are outdated in terms of variety and agrotechnology, and the produce is not in demand on the market. Plans are in place to replant 2,000 hectares with export-oriented varieties, while the remaining land will be transferred to entrepreneurs.
By the end of 2024, reconstruction of the 607-kilometer inter-district “Ung Tarmok” canal will be completed, incorporating a digital management system. This is expected to reduce water loss by 35–40% and improve irrigation across 27,000 hectares.
The president approved the proposed initiatives and gave specific instructions to increase crop yields, create jobs in agriculture, meet domestic food demand, develop processing industries, and enhance the region’s export potential.
