Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A two-day training course "Role of ICT in public administration" was held in the Academy for State and Social Construction under the President of Uzbekistan on 13-14 November that would be followed by a comprehensive training course on ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) from 13 to 21 November 2008.

The events were organized by the Ministry of Economy of Republic of Uzbekistan and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan. The participants of the training courses included 30 staff of the Ministry of Economy representing all regions of Uzbekistan.

During the training course "Role of ICT in public administration", the staff of the Ministry of Economy and representatives of different government agencies learnt about the current development trends of ICT globally, as well as discuss issues related to the legal framework for e-government, electronic documentation flow system, information security through electronic digital signature (EDS).

ICT skills are now a standard requirement for human resources in various areas of work, including public sector. Currently, the Ministry of Economy of Republic of Uzbekistan jointly with UNDP in Uzbekistan implements a project "Strengthening decision-making processes of the Ministry of Economy for better efficiency and effectiveness". One of the major components of the project is the capacity building and enhancement of the staff of the Ministry to effectively use ICT tools. Within the framework of the project, the activities are also targeted at the introduction of the e-docflow system, corporate network, Intranet and Internet portals, as well as at the development of information systems for data collection and statistical analysis.

It should be noted that theoretical and practical parts of the course are stressed on the main factors of the economic development in European countries. Also, the training course includes sessions on practical use of ICT tools, developed within the project and during these practical exercises, the participants will also have an opportunity to learn foreign government portals and increase their knowledge on best practices.

This events were also supported by other joint UNDP and Government of Uzbekistan projects, such as "Assisting the Government of Uzbekistan in the formulation and implementation of ICT for development policy" (known as ICT Policy project), "Improving Public Sector Management Skills through Building Training and Research Capacity of the State Academy for State and Social Construction under the President of Uzbekistan", and "Capacity Building for Internet Technologies Development and Promotion in Uzbekistan - Phase 2" (also known as UZSCINET project).
