MFERIT, French Development Agency ink memorandum
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade of Uzbekistan (MFERIT) hosted a meeting with representatives of business circles of France on 2 March 2013, which was held as a part of the working visit of the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

During the meeting, the partiipants discussed perspectives of bilateral cooperation in various sector of economy, investment potential of Uzbekistan, investment cooperation, special industrial and economic zone Navoi and special industrial zone Angren. The sides expressed mutual interest in expanding and diversification of bilateral trade.

After the talks, a memorandum of understanding between the MFERIT and French Development Agency was signed, which will serve for further expansion of mutual beneficial cooperation between two states.

MFERIT said that bilateral relations between Uzbekistan and France started develop after visit of Uzbek President Islam Karimov to France in October 1993. Uzbekistan and France signed an agreement on friendship and cooperation, intergovernmental agreement on encouragement and mutual protection of investment, intergovernmental agreement on culture, scientific and technical cooperation within the visit. During the second visit to France in 1996, the countries signed an agreement on avoiding double taxation of income and preventing evasion of tax payments from income and capital.

In line with agreement on partnership and cooperation between Uzbekistan and European Union and its member states, which came into force from 1 July 1999, the most favourable trade regime was set between Uzbekistan and France. In 2012, trade turnover between two states hit US$278 million.

Currently, there are 17 joint ventures with French capital in Uzbekistan and four enterprises with 100% French investments.

About 12 French firms accredited their offices at MFERIT. Airbus, Technip, Oberthur, Thales, and Comau France participated in supply of equipment for automobile engine plant in Uzbekistan and other projects.
