Menus in public dining establishments must be in the state language

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Committee for the Development of Competition has reviewed complaints submitted by citizens through social media and other channels regarding the operations of public dining establishments in Uzbekistan.

Inspections revealed that several restaurants and cafes provide menus exclusively in foreign languages — such as Russian, English, Turkish, Chinese, and others — causing inconvenience for customers.

For instance, the Turkish cuisine restaurant Basri Baba had menus available only in Turkish. Following intervention by the relevant authorities, an Uzbek-language version of the menu was prepared, while translations into other languages were retained.

At the Chinese restaurant CHINA CHUAN CHUAN, violations were also identified: staff communicated with customers in foreign languages, and the menu was available only in Russian and Chinese. As a result of corrective measures, Uzbek-speaking staff were employed, and the menu was translated into the state language.

A complaint was filed against the café Bon! (LLC “MIRZO-BOBUR”) for offering service solely in Russian. An inspection revealed that menus in all 26 of its branches are available in Uzbek, with Russian and English versions provided upon request.

The pastry chain CAKELAB also came under scrutiny for offering menus only in Russian. Following an inspection and with the involvement of responsible authorities, the issue was resolved, and the menus were brought into compliance with legal requirements.

According to Article 6 of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On Consumer Protection,” information about goods and services must be provided to consumers in the state language. Additional translations into other languages may also be made available.
