Medvedev to meet with CIS leaders at informal CIS summit
Apart from a general session, which will take place on Friday afternoon, Medvedev plans to hold separate bilateral meeting practically with all counterparts. According to Prikhodko, an agreement to hold the summit was reached in spring, during a meeting of presidents in Moscow. "All leaders have confirmed that they will participate," the aide added.
"The agenda of the informal meeting is traditionally not fixed, which gives the participants an opportunity to discuss different issues, and come out with new ideas and initiatives," he explained. "The summit will present a good opportunity for sincere discussions on all pressing issues in the development of the Commonwealth, as well as for holding bilateral talks," he believes.
"Economic issues are expected to be in the focus of attention," the Kremlin aide said. He added in that connection that the parties would discuss prospects for cooperation in the sphere of energy and transport.
Humanitarian cooperation will be also top on the agenda, he believes. The leaders also expect to consider some organisational issues, connected with the holding in autumn of a next session of the Council of the CIS Heads of State in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan which currently holds the CIS presidency.
Like last year, the summit will be held at the same time as the Petersburg International Economic Forum. "Thus the Forum becomes a convenient platform for an informal exchange of opinions on key directions of multilateral cooperation on the CIS space," Prikhodko believes.
Medvedev plans no separate meetings only with Kazakh President Nursulatan Nazarbayev, with whom he held talks in Astana not long ago, Prikhodko said on Tuesday.
According to Prikhodko, "there is a possibility Medvedev will have a bilateral meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and work to this end is in progress." Contacts with Lukashenko within the framework of the summit and on the sidelines of the event will certainly take place.
Medvedev will meet with Moldova’s Vladimir Voronin, Ukraine’s Viktor Yushchenko, Turkmenistan’s Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, Georgia’s Mikhail Saakashvili, Uzbekistan’s Islam Karimov and Armenia’s Serzh Sarkisyan on June 6.
On June 7 Medvedev plans to meet with the president of Kyrgyzstan, Kurmanbek Bakiyev, and of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmon. The time of some bilateral meetings may be changed, Prikhodko said.
According to the presidential aide, Medvedev plans to meet with his Macedonian counterpart Branko Crvenkovski.
In addition, the Russian president will meet with representatives of foreign business circles, Prikhodko said earlier.
