Medical Contraindications for Air Travel: What Passengers Need to Know

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — While generally considered safe, air travel can pose risks for passengers with certain acute or chronic health conditions.

Changes in cabin pressure, limited mobility, and the confined space of the aircraft can aggravate medical conditions, particularly when contraindications are present. In some cases, airlines have the right to deny boarding on medical grounds to prevent potential risks.

According to Uzbekistan Airports, in 2024, 46 people were barred from flying at Uzbek airports due to health-related concerns. In the first six months of 2025, that figure rose to 61 passengers.

“The overwhelming majority of tragic incidents occur during the flight itself. This underlines the importance of assessing one’s health condition in advance of air travel. Last year, 14 fatalities were recorded, including 11 onboard and 3 in the arrival hall of Tashkent International Airport. In the first half of this year, there were 5 fatal cases — all of them in the air,” noted Sevara Salikhova, Head of the Department for the Development of Medical Support at Uzbekistan Airports.

The main medical contraindications for air travel include:

recent surgical procedures;

acute cardiovascular conditions (such as myocardial infarction or unstable angina);

stroke and other severe neurological disorders;

pneumothorax, severe forms of bronchial asthma, or pneumonia;

thromboembolism, active bleeding, or pronounced anemia;

barotrauma (affecting the ear, sinuses, or eyes);

late-stage pregnancy, especially with complications.

It should be noted that the list of contraindications may vary depending on the airline. In cases of unstable diagnoses, the need for medical assistance or oxygen support, or late-stage pregnancy, carriers may require a medical certificate confirming the passenger’s fitness to fly.

Recommendations for passengers before flying:

Familiarize yourself in advance with the airline’s medical requirements;

If you have chronic illnesses, consult your doctor beforehand;

Obtain a medical certificate if necessary to confirm your ability to travel.

A timely health assessment and adherence to professional advice can help reduce risks and ensure safe air travel both for the passenger and for everyone on board.
