Sports 04/08/2009 Malaysia A Whip Uzbekistan To Boost Final Chances

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Malaysia A, boosted their chances of making the final of the Second Asian Indoor Hockey championship by whipping Uzbekistan 8-2 in their preliminary round match at the Indera Mulia Indoor stadium in Ipoh on Tuesday.

Skipper Nor Saliza Ahmad Soobni, easily the most prominent player on the field, was the toast of the national side when she scored six goals while Nurul Nabila Burhanuddin and Nor Azlin Mohd Ali added one each.

Malaysia A who drew 3-3 against Iran yesterday, took a convincing 5-1 lead in the first half before adding three more after the break.

Nor Saliza started the ball rolling to put Malaysia A in the lead as early as the 4th minute and added five more in the 8th, 13th, 17th, 35th and 39th minutes while Nurul (15th) and Nor Azlin (28) completed the rout.

Uzbekistan’s goals came through Kristina Sereda brace in the 9th and 22nd minutes.

But while Malaysia A boosted their chance of making the final, Malaysia B who lost 2-6 to Kazakhstan yesterday, suffered their second consecutive defeat after losing 0-3 to Iran today.

In another match played at the same venue, Kazakhstan thrashed Thailand 7-0 for their second win in the competition in as many matches.

Tomorrow, Malaysia B face Uzbekistan at 8am and Malaysia A meet Thailand (10am) while Iran take on Kazakhstan at (11.30am).
