Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis has reviewed the annual report of the Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis for Human Rights (Ombudsman) on activities in 2024.

As per the Law on the Ombudsman of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ombudsman submits an annual report no later than 15 February of the following year. The report covered key areas of activity, including parliamentary oversight of human rights legislation, improvements in national legislation, international cooperation, and raising legal awareness among citizens.

The report highlighted the growing role of the Ombudsman in monitoring human rights compliance, reviewing citizen appeals, increasing public and government awareness, and preventing torture through regular prison visits.

In 2024, the Ombudsman received 23,422 appeals, with 140 cases resolved favorably. The number of official requests and recommendations to government agencies increased by 7% compared to 2023. As a result of the Ombudsman’s work, 92 applications were submitted to civil and administrative courts, of which 82 were ruled in favor of the applicants. Regarding labor rights, 1.83 billion soums in unpaid wages were returned to workers, and 20 individuals were reinstated in their jobs.

A total of 902 monitoring visits were conducted in detention facilities, a 50% increase from 2023. Lawmakers particularly noted the effectiveness of monitoring efforts and measures taken to prevent torture and ill-treatment.

Members of parliament praised the Ombudsman’s work and suggested strengthening cooperation with regional representatives and People’s Reception Offices, as well as holding meetings with sector leaders in areas with the highest number of citizen complaints.

Following the session, recommendations were made to further enhance the Ombudsman’s activities, and a corresponding resolution was adopted.
