Leaders of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan Hold Second Meeting of the Supreme Interstate Council
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 2 July, at the "Zagulba" residence, a meeting was held between the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, in a narrow format, followed by the second session of the Supreme Interstate Council.
During the talks, the prospects for further strengthening Uzbek-Azerbaijani relations in the spirit of friendship, strategic partnership, and alliance were discussed. Particular attention was paid to expanding practical cooperation in key areas.
The President of Uzbekistan emphasized that the current state visit and the Supreme Council session take place in the year marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, noting the unprecedented level reached in bilateral ties.
The heads of state highlighted the active development of multifaceted cooperation. Notably, the first Interparliamentary Forum took place recently in Khiva, the Intergovernmental Commission meeting and the Forum of Regions were successfully held in Baku, and the first Forum of Rectors was organized in Andijan, where more than 60 agreements were signed. A significant cultural event was the Azerbaijani ensemble “Shirvan” winning the Grand Prix at the Bakhshi festival in Khiva.
Within the Year of Economic Cooperation, trade turnover between the countries increased by 25%, with the total portfolio of joint projects reaching $4 billion. Currently, about 300 joint ventures are operational.
During the visit, the opening of the new building of the Uzbek embassy in Azerbaijan and the commencement of construction of the “Uzbekistan” park in Baku are planned.
The parties agreed to deepen cooperation at the parliamentary, governmental, ministerial, and regional levels. The importance of mutual support within international organizations was confirmed.
Detailed discussions were held on increasing mutual trade and investment flows to $1 billion annually. A decision was made to implement a Cooperation Program including projects in industry, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, tourism, banking, and other sectors.
Significant emphasis was placed on expanding the joint investment company’s activities. New cooperation mechanisms, such as the Entrepreneurs’ Council and the Forum of Industrial and Economic Zones, received support.
Special attention was given to transport and communication integration issues. In particular, Uzbekistan’s participation in developing the Middle Corridor was reviewed. Transit of Uzbek cargo via this route grew by 25%, exceeding 1 million tons. Since March this year, an electronic permit system has been introduced within transportation operations.
An agreement was reached to accelerate the implementation of the joint project on exporting electricity to Europe.
In connection with the diplomatic relations anniversary, the parties decided to hold a series of joint cultural and youth events this autumn.
The presidents also exchanged views on current international and regional agenda issues.
During the session, reports were heard from the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Commission, as well as the ministers of transport, energy, and culture. Following the meeting, a decision was made to develop and implement a “roadmap” for the effective execution of the agreements reached.
