Lawmakers approve bill on protecting cultural and recreational areas

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) —  The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis has passed the first reading of a draft law aimed at strengthening the protection of cultural and recreational zones. The bill, developed as a legislative initiative by several deputies, marks the first proposed legislation from the newly formed parliament.

During the inaugural session of the Oliy Majlis, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that every proposal supported by the public and presented by political parties during the election campaign would be reviewed and implemented. Notably, the Social Democratic Party "Adolat" advocated for a ban on privatizing parks, embankments, and alleys, a position widely supported.

Building on this, factions of the Social Democratic Party "Adolat" and the Ecological Party in the Legislative Chamber collaborated to draft and submit the bill for consideration.

The proposed law introduces measures to prohibit the alienation of cultural and recreational objects, as well as the land on which they are situated. It also restricts reducing the size of such areas, constructing new buildings (except for lightweight structures), or expanding existing building spaces within these zones. Violations of these regulations will face stricter criminal liability.

Additionally, the bill proposes including "botanical gardens" in the list of protected natural areas. It bans the transfer of land where botanical gardens are located, as well as construction or expansion of building spaces within their territories.

During the discussions, deputies shared their opinions and suggestions regarding the content and significance of the bill, highlighting key provisions. Detailed responses were provided to the deputies' inquiries about the proposed legislation.

The bill was adopted by lawmakers in its first reading during the session.
