Latvian Embassy becomes NATO Contact Point Embassy in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Uzbekistan Igors Apokins officially received capacity of NATO Contact Point Envoy in Uzbekistan from the United States on 11 February, the Ministry of Foreign Ministry of Latvia said in a statement.

According to the ministry, the official ceremony on handing over capacity of NATO Contact Point Envoy was organized by Embassy of the USA in Uzbekistan. The US Embassy carried out this function in 2009-2010.

Representatives of parliament and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, as well as Ambassadors of NATO countries and military attaches, accredited in Uzbekistan, participated at the ceremony.

The Latvian Foreign Affairs Ministry said that the Latvian Embassy in Uzbekistan started to implement capacity of NATO Contact Point Embassy from 1 January 2011. The embassy will conduct this function in 2011-2012.

The main obligations of NATO Contact Point Embassy are to inform partner-countries of alliance about it policies and tasks, strengthening contacts and cooperation between the countries, Latvian Ministry said.

Latvian ministry underlined that Uzbekistan is close partner of the NATO in issues related to stabilization of situation in Afghanistan. Uzbekistan makes significant contributions to transit of non-military cargo to NATO forces in Afghanistan.
