Economy 06/05/2009 Kyrgyzstan to build power stations "whether one likes it or not" - leader
Central Asia
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Kyrgyzstan will build the Kambarata hydroelectric power stations, whether one likes it or not, Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev said at a meeting with representatives of the non-government sector.

He said that despite the global economic crisis, Kyrgyzstan continued building the Kambarata II hydroelectric power station on its own. The construction of the Kambarata I hydroelectric power station, with a similar cascade, will start soon.

The president said that the authorities were taking all necessary measures to make the impact of the global crisis less severe for Kyrgyzstan than other countries.

Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan oppose Kyrgyzstan’s plans, saying their agriculture industries may suffer from a fall in regional water levels if the plants are built.
