Korea suffered a shock 2-0 defeat against Cameroon in their opening Group C fixture in Suez and will put their tournament hopes on the line against Germany, who themselves were immensely impressive in thrashing the United States 3-0 in their opener.
“We’re not out of it yet,” said Korea Republic coach Hong Myung-bo. “Sure, we lost our first match but there are two more to come. We played very well against Cameroon and were no weaker than our opponents.
“What we now need to do is come out stronger against Germany.”
The Koreans are expected to line up as they did against Cameroon three days earlier, though goalkeeper Lee Bum-young’s sixth minute howler is likely to be drawn into sharp focus with rival custodian Kim Seung-gyu now available for selection.
Uzbekistan will take some confidence from their narrow defeat against Ghana into their make or break Group D game against Uruguay, who like the Korea Republic’s upcoming opponents were good value for their opening round win - 1-0 over England.
The Uzbeks are still searching for their first ever FIFA U-20 World Cup point and will simply need to produce their best against Uruguay to have any chance of progressing to the Round of 16.
“Obviously we still want to qualify for the next phase and that might require a few changes for this match,” said Uzbekistan coach Akhmad Ubaydullaev.
“The players and coaching staff will be doing our best both in the lead up to the game and during the 90 minutes itself."
