During its visit in Uzbekistan Korean delegation headed by the President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) Mr. Choue Chung-Won met the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis (parliament) of Uzbekistan, Honourary Chairman of Taekwondo Association of Uzbekistan Erkin Halilov.
Mr. Halilov spoke about the importance given to sport, as one of the priority directions of state policy, in Uzbekistan, the effectiveness of the large-scale work carried out to engage people, particularly women and young people, in physical education and different types of sports.
Along with other types of oriental martial arts, Taekwondo is becoming increasingly popular in Uzbekistan. Currently over 20,000 sportsmen attend Taekwondo classes. The achievements of the professional Uzbek taekwondo sportsmen at the international competitions are the practical results of the attention given to this type of sport. Thus, in 2006, Eugeniya Karimova from Uzbekistan won silver at the 15th Summer Asian Games in Qatar.
The Taekwondo Association of Uzbekistan supports the relations with South Korean partners in the issues of preparation and improvement of qualifications of coaches and sportsmen.
During the meeting, the parties exchanged opinions on the issues of strengthening and developing partnership in this sphere.
The delegation of the World Taekwondo Association also held talks with the Chairman of the National Olympics Committee of Uzbekistan, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Rustam Kurbonov.
