Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev becomes the President of Kazakhstan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev took the oath of the President of Kazakhstan, Tengrinews.kz reports.

According to the Constitution, he will be the head of the country until the expiration of the election term of the First President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The next presidential elections in Kazakhstan should be held in 2020.

“I solemnly swear to faithfully serve the people of Kazakhstan, strictly follow the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan, guarantee the rights and freedoms of citizens, conscientiously perform the high duties of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan entrusted to me,” Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev said.

The chairman of the Constitutional Council, Kairat Mami, announced the transfer of authority from the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, to the head of the Senate of Parliament, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev. The head of the Central Election Commission, Berik Imashev, presented Tokayev the president’s certificate, standard and order.

On the eve of Nursultan Nazarbayev, who held the presidency for almost 30 years, said he was retiring. He transferred his authority to Tokayev. After the resignation, Nazarbayev will head the Security Council of Kazakhstan, remain at the head of the Nur Otan party and will be a member of the Constitutional Council of the Republic.
