JICA granted modern seismological equipment to Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 6 September 2012, in the framework of Follow-up Cooperation Project on “Seismology, Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management Policy”, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) granted modern seismological equipment worth of USD 99,963 to Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent.

Previously, a specialist of the University participated at JICA course on “Seismology, Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Management Policy” held at Building Research Institute in Tsukuba, Japan. Now, he has a rare opportunity to successfully apply and enhance the received advanced knowledge through using the granted modern equipment and effectively disseminate the knowledge among his colleagues.

The equipment includes earthquake and structural monitoring system made by Guralp Systems Ltd. and multinode parallel computing facility made by Hewlett Packard, which will be used to record regional earthquakes and teleseismic events, monitor seismic stability of structures at the time they are built, conduct computer simulations of dynamic response of artificial and natural structures during seismic load. Furthermore, the new equipment will facilitate the ex-trainee’s activity on developing new theoretical and experimental methods for earthquake investigations, monitoring of seismic instabilities and seismic process computer modeling, and enable collecting data in digital format, which meets international standards, that will contribute to improved data sharing.

Aside from provision of the equipment, JICA also assisted the University in conducting an international scientific conference titled “Complexity in Earthquake Dynamics: From Nonlinearity to Earthquake Prediction and Seismic Stability”, which was focused on the recent developments in computer simulation of earthquake dynamics and important issues of predicting and modeling of the other natural disastrous phenomena. Featuring an international nature, the conference became a platform to discuss seismic issues among the related organizations, joined by academicians and practicians from the Central Asian countries as well as Germany, Italy, Turkey, and Japan.

It is believed that the assistance provided by JICA will essentially contribute to the seismological research activity and thereby improve further safety of the population in Uzbekistan.
