At the meeting with the Parliamentary Secretary of Justice of Japan Shinsuke Okuno, the Minister of Justice of Uzbekistan Foziljon Otahonov provided the details on the course of the judicial-legal reforms taking place in the country, Press-uz.info quoted Ministry of Justice press service.

In particular, the head of the Uzbek Justice Minister told the Japanese guests about the changes in the activity of the ministry and its divisions following the independence. Thus, as an example of the work carried out he pointed out that 15 codes and over 400 laws were developed in cooperation with the ministry’s experts.

Mr. Shinsuke Okuno was told about the activity of the Centre for monitoring the implementation of the regulatory and legislative acts, which carries out a systematic analysis of the law-enforcement practice. Specifically, it exercises control over the implementation of the newly adopted and amended regulatory and legislative acts in practice by the ministries, state committees, agencies, prosecutor’s offices and courts, divisions of the Ministry of Justice, as well as state agencies.

Speaking of the measures being adopted to ensure the independence of the judges, Minister Otahonov said that Higher Qualification Commission was formed in Uzbekistan to develop recommendations on the election and appointment of judges. Meanwhile, the ministry is responsible only for the implementation of the court decisions, as well as their financial and technical support.

It was specifically noted that the ministry was paying high attention to the issues of human rights protection, legal support of enterprise, including the legal framework for the protection of foreign investments. Currently, around 3,000 companies with foreign investments, including 600 foreign enterprises are operating on the territory of Uzbekistan. The Ministry of Justice has registered some 5,000 non-governmental nonprofit organizations, and the offices of 51 foreign NGOs.

The Uzbek party noted with satisfaction on the assistance of the Japanese government in the creation of the "National Database of Laws of the Republic of Uzbekistan".
