Istomin's success can propel Uzbekistan tennis to greater heights: Lebed Petr
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The recent success of Uzbek tennis star Denis Istomin on the ATP Tour is bound to take Uzbekistan tennis to greater heights, more players will now look at emulating his performance felt the captain and the chief coach of the Uzbekistan Tennis team Lebed Petr.

Petr was speaking on the sidelines of the $125,000 Tashkent Challenger , a ATP Challenger series event at the Olympic School tennis courts , he said that we now have good pool of young players who can continue the good work setup by Istomin.

Petr who completes a decade as the coach of the Davis Cup team said, though he was worried with a slight imbalance in the composition of team which will have one top 50 player while the others in the 300 bracket, this would be soon rectified and we will have a strong team.

Speaking about the new pool of players he said he was confident that young players like the 15 year old Temur Ismailov and other youngster Sergey Shipilov would be able to make their mark soon and keep the Uzbek flag flying high.

He admitted that the Uzbekistan tennis Federation's policy of hosting major international tennis events like these has helped players in their pursuit to achieve higher ranking at the world stage and Istomin and Akgul Amanmuradova are the notable results of this programme.

About the expectations from Uzbek players at the Challenger this year , he said "I'm sure we will have better results this year at the Challenger, I have great expectations from Farrukh Dustov. I have just seen him play in Serbia where he did extremely well. I expect him to continue the same form".

On asked about the young talent in the regions Petr said: "The UTF has introduced coaching certification programmes all over the nation and many young players are now qualified coaches , this will herald a change in the coaching techniques and will help newer talent to emerge from the regions like Andijan and Namangan Samarkhand, Bukhara and Karshi apart from Tashkent.

Raising a point about the upcoming Davis Cup Tie, Petr said playing at home will surely be an advantage. "My aim now is to make a strong Uzbekistan team, we have good individual players and young, but now the work is to gel the same players into a good team, and I'm sure Uzbekistan will be a power to reckon with at The Asia Oceania zone and also probably the world group , he summed up.
