Issues of introducing international labor standards and decent work principles into the textile industry were considered

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 11 December, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, Chairperson of the National Commission for Combating Trafficking in Persons and Forced Labor Tanzila Narbaeva met with Damien Sanfilippo, senior program director of the international non-profit organization Better Cotton Initiative (BCI).

The sides discussed issues of further development of cotton clusters in our country, strengthening cooperation on the introduction of system standards based on the “Better Cotton” principle in farms.

During the conversation, attention was paid to the work carried out with the active participation of civil society in the implementation of international labor standards and promotion of the principles of decent work.

It is known that within the framework of the National Commission for the implementation of international standards in the textile industry of the republic, a separate “Road Map” was adopted, including measures for the integration of BCI standards, and its practical implementation is ensured.

At the meeting, an exchange of views also took place on the work carried out within the framework of the activities of the multilateral Advisory Council with the participation of ministries and departments that are part of the National Commission, as well as BCI and other international experts.

It should be noted that the Advisory Council, operating in Uzbekistan with the support of the international non-governmental organization Better Cotton, acts as a permanent platform for organizing dialogue between national stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental non-profit organizations, business representatives and the public.

Damien Sanfilippo especially noted that Uzbekistan is becoming an attractive country on the international stage, influential brands are interested in cooperation with the country's cotton clusters, Uzbekistan can become a good example for other countries in establishing a multilateral dialogue.

Following the meeting, an agreement was reached to further strengthen cooperation through the implementation of new joint projects and programs in the field of implementation of international labor standards.
