Uzbekistan 22/06/2009 Intl conference discusses settlement of conflict in Afghanistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An international conference “Afghanistan: problems of stabilization and perspectives of reconstruction” was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on 17-18 June 2009. The event was organized by Regional Policy Fund and George Marshall European Center for Securities Studies.

Representatives of Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, India, USA, Russia, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, Slovenia, Japan, South Korea, Central Asian states and diplomatic missions and international organizations, accredited in Uzbekistan, participated at the event.

Participants discussed issues of developing military-political situation in Afghanistan, social-economic and ethno-cultural aspects of solving Afghan problem, approaches to ensuring security and stability in Afghanistan, role of neighbouring states in rehabilitation of Afghanistan, etc.

The meeting noted significant potential in initiatives of Uzbekistan on settlement of conflict in Afghanistan, stabilization of political and social-economic situation in the country, UzA reported. Participants said that Afghan problem cannot be solved with armed forces.

Participants said the priority should be targeted economic assistance to Afghanistan, which would solve poverty and employment problems, construction and formation of economic and social infrastructure.

They also noted that Afghans should be attracted to conflict settlement process and the fate of the country in hands of Afghan people.

Participants said that settlement of Afghanistan conflict is important factor for regional and global security.
