Intl community should assist Afghanistan – Uzbek leader
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- International community should render targeted economic, financial social and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan under aegis of the UN to establish peace and stability in Afghanistan, the Uzbek President Islam Karimov said at the joint session of the Legislative Chamber and Senate of Oliy Majlis on 27 January 2010.

He said that over the past 30 years billions and billions have been spent to solve the Afghan problem. It looks obvious today that the entire approach has to be changed to settle the situation in this country, he added.

Uzbek leader said national customs, culture and religious values of multinational and multi- confession Afghanistan should be respected.

President Islam Karimov said that London will host international conference on Afghan problems. Several countries states that the Afghan conflict could not be resolved with military means, which shows correct position of Uzbekistan on this issue.

“Today, many states assist Afghanistan and naturally, neighboring states are interested in peace and stability in Afghanistan more than others. Uzbekistan also renders huge assistance to Afghanistan”, he said.

Uzbek president said Uzbekistan increased electricity supply to Afghanistan six times in 2010 compared with previous year.

Karimov said the Uzbek specialists started to lay railroad Termez-Hairaton-Mazar-e-Sharif, which will completed by the end of this year.
