Uzbekistan 06/10/2009 Inter-Parliamentary HIV Conference starts in Kyrgyzstan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Fourth Inter-Parliamentary Conference of Central Asia and Azerbaijan on legislative securing of anti-HIV measures started in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday.

Deputies and members of the governments from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and delegates from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations are taking part in the event.

Participants will get acquainted with practical implementation of harm reduction programs. In particular, they will visit units, providing with sterile injection sets and centers of substitution therapy for drug addicts at health care institutions and the penal system.

Non-governmental organizations will represent their experience in introduction of drug addicts social support programs, including former prisoners. The participants will also exchange experience in sphere of HIV/AIDS legislation improvement as part of regional cooperation for the last year.

The work will reportedly result in resolution and concrete steps for further improvement of legal basis in HIV pandemic prevention, including harm reduction programs.
