Illegal construction halted near cultural heritage site in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Tashkent Interdistrict Economic Court has ordered the suspension of construction work in the Yakkasaray district following an appeal by the Cultural Heritage Agency, initiated by Uzbekistan’s Foundation for the Development of Culture and Art.

The construction, which was carried out in violation of the law, posed a potential threat to the Museum of Applied Arts of Uzbekistan—an important cultural heritage site and a striking example of Tashkent modernism.

The museum is not only a repository of unique artistic traditions but also an integral part of Tashkent’s architectural identity, reflecting the city's history and culture. Preserving such landmarks is a key aspect of protecting the country's historical heritage.

After reviewing the case, the court determined that the construction violated regulations and could lead to irreversible consequences for the heritage site. As a result, it ordered an immediate halt to the work, the dismantling of illegal structures, and the restoration of the site to its original state.

The Foundation for the Development of Culture and Art emphasized the importance of preserving Tashkent’s historical environment and called for strict compliance with legislation when implementing construction projects in culturally and historically significant areas.

This ruling marks an important step in protecting the city’s architectural heritage and serves as a reminder of the need for responsible urban planning. The case highlights that cultural heritage preservation is not just about history—it is a responsibility to future generations.
