Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 23-24 November the semifinals of International collegiate programming contest between the university teams of Central Asian republics (ACM–ICPC) in Middle Asia group of North-Eastern European region are held. More than 40 teams from Central Asian technical educational institutions were engaged in the competition for the right to participate in the final round.

The organizers of the annual competition are Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education of Uzbekistan, Ministry ofNational Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Uzbek Agency of Communications and Information (UzACI), UNDP "ICT Policy" (ICTP) Project and Tashkent University of Information Technology (TUIT).

“ICT Policy” (ICTP) Project of UNDP each year supports Tashkent semifinal round of the competition. This year as usual the finalists will be rewarded with personal computers, digital photo cameras and other valuable prizes from ICTP Project.

According to the semifinal contest results among student teams from Central Asian universities, which were represented by 125 students, the best team was announced to be the one of the Kazakh-British Technical University (Kazakhstan).

According to the rules established for more than twenty years’ history of the competition each team of 3 participants is supplied with a computer and offered to solve in five hours as many of the assigned problems as possible. During this time the team should solve from 6 to 12 tasks. The team that solves the largest number of tasks becomes the winner. In case of equal number of solved tasks preference is given to the team that has spent less time.

The international contest consists of three phases: quarterfinal, semifinal and final. Teams from more than 25 regional groups meet at the semifinal stage. The winners of semifinal rounds compete in the final. The final competition determines the world champion team as well as the continental champion teams.

About 85 teams will be selected for participation in the global final of ACM-ICPC 2011, which will be held in February 24- March 4 in Egypt.

The annual student team programming championship among national teams of the institutes of higher education (ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest) has been conducted by ACM - Association for Computing Machinery (the First Society in Computing) since 1977. These competitions are the global computer community’s most prestigious intellectual contests for young programming elite. The competitions are considered by leading computer companies as a source of replenishment for most qualified personnel and are traditionally supported by major computer corporations.
