How do young people choose an employer?

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Talentist study revealed what is important for young people aged 16 to 24 when deciding on a job.

Employer selection factors

These data were obtained based on the results of The Talentist employer brand perception study conducted by ANCOR.

For young candidates under 24 years of age, more than for all Uzbeks, when choosing a company, good wages are a priority - 51.8% (in the total sample - 48%). In second place in importance are broad opportunities for career growth - 48.7%, while in the general sample this criterion is in 6th place - 40.2%. In third place in importance is interesting work - 48.2% (in the overall ranking - 42.4%). Among yesterday’s graduates’ areas of special attention are the quality products and services of the company - 46.6% (for the general population - 41.8%) and a pleasant working atmosphere - 46.4% (for the general sample - 42.6%).

Also important to young professionals: the opportunity to study and undergo training - 43.3% (overall - 38.4%) and balance between work and personal life - 43% (overall sample - 40%). When choosing an employer, young professionals also pay attention to the convenient location - 42.2% (nationally - 41.1%).

The financial stability of the company is relevant for the younger generation - 42% (total sample -38.7%), provision of equal opportunities - 41.1% (34.3% in the overall rating), as well as a good reputation - 39.8% (40, 1% overall). ANCOR also observes a significant difference in opinions regarding guarantees of long-term activity - 38.8% of the younger generation chose this factor among the most important, which is 3.5% more than the national average (35.3%). Strong leadership also plays an important role - 38.7% and the use of modern technologies - 38.3%.

Working conditions, benefits and corporate support

The majority of respondents from 16 to 24 work and study at the same time (43.1%), 32.7% of respondents work full-time, another 16.2% of young professionals work part-time.

The importance of financial assistance in difficult life situations was noted by 69.7% of young people versus 71.8% in the general sample.

About 69.3% allocated compensation for travel to their place of work, which is as important for young people as for other age groups (73.8%). 

The top 5 most important methods of employee support for young people included: additional days off and a discount on company products (69.2 each), medical insurance (69.1%), compensation for cellular communications (68.4%), travel insurance (67.4%), life insurance (66.3%). 

Representatives of young people pay considerable attention to compensation or organizing meals and compensation for sports activities (65.9% each). 65.3% of young employees noted medical insurance for family members as attractive options, 64.3% - an option/share in the company’s capital, 62.2% - training and compensation for additional education.

Young professionals value employer support in choosing a convenient work schedule (23%). Next come financial advice (22%), sports (21%) and medical services (20%). 18% of respondents noted that they would like help in purchasing or paying for housing, and 14% noted consultations with a psychologist.

Reasons for changing jobs and work preferences

Young people most often changed employers due to lack of satisfaction from their work (26.9%), unsuitable work schedule (24.8%) and too low salary (22.1%). Other reasons cited included: excessive workload (21.4%), dissatisfaction with company management (20.7%) and impossibility of career growth (17.9%). Important criteria for changing jobs were the lack of work-life balance (17.9%) and the lack of flexible working conditions (15.9%).

Young people aged 16 to 24 would prefer to have their own business (21%) or work in government organizations (13%). About 10% of young professionals would prefer to be self-employed or freelance, and 9% to work for an international commercial company.

Young people, more than others, use social networks and instant messengers (27.6%), as well as job portals (26.5%) as job search channels. The most popular social network for the younger generation is Telegram, noted by 82.6% of respondents, second place was taken by Instagram (57.8%). Among job portals, Olx (47.8%) became the leader, followed by hh.uz (43.1%).
