Generations Pass, Traditions Remain
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Generations Pass, Traditions Remain… Such is the title of a photo exhibition that is certain to make a lasting impression on the visitors. The vario-effect exhibition is a collaborative effort between Fund Forum and Moscow photographer Alikhan. The exhibition presents a series of unique photos that center on the succession of generations and veneration for tradition, a phenomenon that is characteristic of Uzbekistan. The special technique of creating the photos enable the viewers to grasp the main idea of the show -- young girls morph into aging women, and vice versa, while their clothes and jewelry remain the same, a vario effect that reflects the title of the project.

At first glance, the photo features a young girl. However, if you look at it from a different angle the girl morphs into an older woman, which makes for the zing of the unique art project.

Another photo shows a young model, Kamila Begmatova, who becomes Klara Jalilova, a prominent Uzbek actress, if you walk a few steps to the left or right. Up-and-coming young actress Dilnoza Kubayeva featured in one of the photos changes into 82-year-old Uzbek actress Yaira Abdullayeva. While the ladies’ faces and hands got old and young at different angles, their clothes and accessories remained the same.

The photo shoot involved 20 women that represent various generations. Another circumstance that makes the project unique is that the young girl bears uncanny resemblance to the older woman that she morphs into, in each exhibit.

Why did Alikhan decide to use a female image? The project was given several goals: to demonstrate not only traditions that have survived through centuries but also unique Uzbek national costumes from the17th-18th century as well as female decorations.

“The photo shoots took place in three museums in Tashkent,” says Alikhan. “The whole process took a few weeks. We worked not only with famous actresses but also with ordinary women, whom we selected for quite a long time based on their oriental looks.”
