French companies may participate in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — French companies may be involved in the implementation of a project to build a small-scale nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan. This was announced by Azim Akhmedkhadjaev, Director of the Atomic Energy Agency of Uzbekistan ("Uzatom"), in an interview with Le Figaro.

Energy was a key topic of discussion during President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's state visit to Paris. France expressed interest in cooperation, particularly in uranium mining in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. This interest is driven by geopolitical instability in Africa, especially the potential cessation of operations by the French company Orano in Niger, where it has been active for over 50 years.

Uzbekistan, experiencing both economic and demographic growth, seeks to diversify its energy mix. As part of this strategy, the country is considering partnerships with companies from France, Russia, China, Western nations, Asia, and the Middle East.

"France has a well-balanced energy system and extensive experience in its management, making it a valuable partner for Uzbekistan," stated Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov.
