Forage crops as an instrument of effective land management
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The seminar “Forage crops as an instrument of effective land management” was held by the joint project of the United Nations Development Programme, Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources (MAWR) of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Israeli Agency for International Development Cooperation MASHAV “Support for Sustainable Development of Livestock Sector in Uzbekistan”.

Issues of crop rotation and use of forage crops against land degradation have been discussed in the seminar, conducted by prominent specialists in the area of ecology, agriculture and livestock.

Sustainable development of one of the most important sectors of agriculture of Uzbekistan – livestock requires creation of a solid feed base, preservation and improvement of agricultural lands. Rational use of seed breeding, as well as introduction of crop rotation is important both for creation of sufficient feed base and preservation and improvement of the major agricultural resource – land.

Seed breeding, including forage crops seed selection taking into account seasonal factors and needs of the livestock breeding entity is one of the preconditions of high forage crop yields. At the same time, proper crop rotation guarantees effective use of water, labor, technical and energy resources and increases land productivity. During the second part of the seminar the participants discussed the issues of livestock waste management.

Effective waste management, observance of sanitary-hygienic norm of utilization and storage enable to both decrease the damage to the environment and obtain high quality fertilizers and increase agricultural crop yields. Discussion of economic benefits of using waste in forage crops cultivation stirred particular interest among participants. Organization of such seminars is called to promote rational use of agricultural resources, optimization of livestock through creation of solid feed base, preservation of land quality and increased environmental awareness among population.
