Economy 04/05/2007 First vegetable caravan from Uzbekistan arrived

The first loads of fresh vegetables from Uzbekistan have arrived in the city of Karaganda, Kazakhstan, which was possible due to agreements reached between the administration of the Karaganda region and Uzbek suppliers.

The first load consisted of 5 large lorries, which brought over 100 tonnes of vegetables mainly potatoes, carrots, onions and tomatoes to Karaganda and Temirtau. Now, the so-called green caravans will be arriving in the Karaganda region every week.

Murat Musatayev, deputy head of Karaganda region says the volume of supplies will be increasing, the assortment will be broader and all this will last until the autumn. Then, they are planning to create common trade houses both in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan as we have already reached a preliminary agreement and in the near future these plans will be implemented.

According to the local authorities, the region will be able to complete President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s instructions to reduce prices for food, particularly fruit and vegetables, resulting from supplies from the neighbouring state.
