Expansion of land areas for growing medicinal plants

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Abu Ali ibn Sina proved the effectiveness of the use of medicinal plants in medicine, as well as which plants should be used in which case in the treatment, depending on the type of disease.

Currently, out of 12 thousand species of medicinal plants in different countries of the world, more than a thousand are used in the pharmaceutical industry, and in our country there are 112 such species out of 1.2 thousand species of medicinal plants.

In recent years, consistent reforms have been carried out in the republic in the field of protection of medicinal plants, rational use of natural resources, organization of plantations of medicinal plants and their processing.

In particular, the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan from 20 May 2022 “On measures to create a value chain through the efficient use of the raw material base and support for the processing of medicinal plants” provides for deep processing through the effective use of the raw material base of medicinal plants, support for business entities, as well as the creation of a chain added value.

A resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan from 20 May 2022 “On measures to organize the cultural cultivation, processing and widespread use of medicinal plants in treatment” was also adopted.

In order to ensure the implementation of these documents, on agricultural lands, the volume of cultivation of medicinal and spice plants on the total area was brought to 17.3 thousand hectares, including 4.2 thousand hectares on the main areas and up to 13.1 thousand hectares on areas where irrigation canals do not reach, and 19.1 thousand tons of raw materials were harvested. In 2022, the number of clusters has been increased to 16, and the number of economic entities growing medicinal plants to 235.

In total, it is planned to allocate 17.7 thousand hectares for planting medicinal plants in 2023.

From these areas, it is planned to produce a total of 20 thousand tons of medicinal plants, including 16 thousand tons of licorice, 700 tons of ferula, 1.3 thousand tons of Capparis spinosa and 600 tons of wild rose, as well as 1.4 thousand tons of other medicinal plants.
