Energy sector: a key driver of economic growth and foreign investment

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A separate meeting was held to discuss the case study "Energy sector: a key driver of economic growth and foreign investment".

The discussion was attended by Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, Investment Director of ACWA Power Clive Tarton, Director of Department of the Ministry of Finance Khurshed Mustafoev, Permanent Director in Uzbekistan of Electricité de France Pierre-Paul Antenissens, member of the Executive Board of Siemens Energy Karim Amin and other specialists.

The purpose of this discussion is to highlight the successes and challenges of current PPP projects in the energy sector. The government has launched its PPP program to bring private sector funding, expertise, skills and efficiency to public sector projects.

With the support of ADB, IFC and EBRD, PPP investments to date have been concentrated in the energy generation sector, with 19 projects allocated by the government to generate 8.9 GW of electricity, with 2.9 GW of the total coming from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy.

The government is strongly committed to transforming the energy sector, aiming for a "green economy" through the transition to renewable energy sources. Uzbekistan aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to 8,000 MW by 2026 and 12,000 MW by 2030, bringing its share of total generation to 25%.
