Employees of government agencies are trained on the provisions of the UN Convention against Torture

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 18 July, a training was held in Tashkent region on the topic "Improving the professional skills of employees of state bodies in connection with the preparation of the sixth periodic report of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and punishment."

The four-day training was organized by the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan in cooperation with the Office of the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan. It was held for law enforcement officials and representatives of the academic community.

The main purpose of the event was to familiarize with the best practices of foreign countries, improve knowledge and skills in the framework of the preparation of the Sixth Periodic Report of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the implementation of the Convention against Torture.

During the training, national experts provided information on the measures taken by Uzbekistan to implement the final recommendations of the UN Committee against Torture.

The participants were introduced to the activities of the UN Committee against Torture, the process of reporting on the implementation of the Convention against Torture and international standards in this area.

As noted at the beginning of the training, Uzbekistan is implementing systematic measures to fulfill international obligations in the field of human rights and freedoms, including the creation of the necessary organizational and legal conditions for the prevention and eradication of torture.

“The prohibition of ill-treatment and torture is a fundamental right recognized both in international human rights treaties and in the national legislation of countries around the world. According to the new version of the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan, no one can be subjected to torture, violence, other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” said Akmal Saidov, First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Director of the National Center for Human Rights.

This training was organized as part of the Roadmap for the implementation of OSCE projects in Uzbekistan for 2023-2024.
