Elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan will be held on 23 December 2007, a senior Uzbek official said at the meeting of Central Election Committee of Uzbekistan that was held at the National Press Centre on 18 September.
The press conference was attended by the representatives of Uzbek mass media, as well as foreign information services accredited in Uzbekistan.
Elections of the President of Uzbekistan according to Article 1 of the Law "On elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan" are carried out by the citizens of Uzbekistan on the basis of common, equal and direct electoral franchise in secrete vote.
The announcement of the start of the election campaign is in time, as in accordance with Article 8 of the Law "On elections of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan" the commencement of election campaign is announced by the Central Election Committee in mass media not later than three months prior to termination of Uzbek President’s authority that falls on December this year.
All citizens of Uzbekistan from 18-years-old have the right to vote for the President. Any direct or indirect restrictions of electoral rights of citizens depending on birth, social and property position, race and national belonging, gender, education, language, religion, type and character of occupation are forbidden.
Elections of the President of Uzbekistan, like in Legislative Chamber [lower house] of Oliy Majlis [parliament] of Uzbekistan and Jokargy Kenes [parliament] of Karakalpakstan, representative bodies of state authority of regions, districts, cities are held respectively in the year of termination of constitutional term of their authorities – on the first Sunday of the third decade of December.
