Uzbekistan 25/05/2007 Egyptian website writes on “Charming Eden” of Ancient East - Samarkand

The website of o­ne of the leading news agencies in the Arab world – the Egyptian News Agency "MENA" posted a story o­n Samarkand headlined as "The capital of Maveraunnakhr – Samarkand-marks its 2750th anniversary". The news agency reported about the ancient history, rich culture and unrivalled o­n their beauty and charm the monuments of this ancient city.

At the same time, the agency wrote that in line with the UNESCO’s decision this year Uzbekistan shall commemorate the 275t0h anniversary of Samarkand, Jahon news agency reported.

The website also wrote that for over the span of several centuries Samarkand had been o­ne of the main hubs of Islamic culture. The story says that Iranian, Indian, Egyptian, Chinese and Byzantine historians and poets named Samarkand variously. The most popular among such names were "Eden of the ancient East", "Pearl of Islamic World", "Rome of the East", and "Face of Earth".

During the reign of the great statesman and commander Amir Temur Samarkand stood for a capital of the vast empire. Its limits spanned from the River of Indus to Bosphorus, according to the story.

While writing o­n that up to date many ancient monuments have been preserved in Samarkand, including the Amir Temur Tomb and Bibi Khonim Mosque to name a few, the news agency had reported that the Shakhi Zinda Memorial Complex also shelters the burial tomb of the Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) cousin Qusam ibn Abbas.

"Ancient monuments of Samarkand are the masterpieces of the medieval town-planning", - the news agency wrote.

"The white cupolas of the buildings in the city, bright and different-colored national costumes out of silk, the world-known taste of local breads, unrivalled beauty and charm of the city shall remain with a person forever, who has even o­nce visited the earthly bounty".
