Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The French company EDF is undertaking two large-scale projects to construct power plants in Uzbekistan.
EDF is currently working on the development of a 1.6-gigawatt thermal power plant in the Syrdarya region.
The project, valued at US$1.2 billion, is expected to become one of the most energy-efficient facilities in the country.
The plant is scheduled to commence operations in spring 2026. It will generate 12 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, with an efficiency rate exceeding 60%. This high efficiency will save 1.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas each year.
Additionally, in partnership with major international collaborators, EDF is designing a combined-cycle gas turbine power plant in the Angor district of the Surkhandarya region. This plant will have a capacity of 1,500 megawatts and is expected to begin operations in 2027.
Pierre-Paul Antennesens, EDF’s Director for Central Asia, noted in an interview with Uzbekistan 24 that the company is considering new projects in Uzbekistan, including the development of energy infrastructure, hydropower, and renewable energy sources.
Founded in 1946, EDF is France's state-owned electricity company. Its primary production facilities are located in Italy, the United Kingdom, Belgium, and other countries. In 2023, EDF reported a turnover of nearly €140 billion, with total assets exceeding €350 billion.
